Owning Animals in Bothell

Keeping of animals shall not constitute a public nuisance which endangers the public health, safety or general welfare, in accordance with BMC Title 6,

 Animals. Suitable structures or fences shall be provided to restrain animals from leaving the premises. Animals other than and in excess of those permitted by this title shall require a conditional use permit. The raising and keeping of animals for agricultural purposes is regulated under BMC 12.06.030.

  • You may own 3 dogs, 3 cats, or a combination of 4 dogs and cats in the city limits of Bothell.   • You may request a Special Hobby Kennel License through Bothell’s Animal Control Officer to allow the addition of another dog or cat until again reaching the legal limit.
  • You may request a Hobby Kennel License through Bothell’s Animal Control Officer to allow ownership above the legal limit as a non-commercial cattery or kennel at a private residence where 4 or more adult dogs or cats are bred or kept for hunting, training and exhibition for organized shows, field, working and/or obedience trials or for enjoyment of the species. 
  • You may own chickens within the city limits of Bothell, though Roosters are prohibited. Restrictions on quantity and ownership of other types of animals, also located here.
